About this project

This 9/11 Day, turn a small act of creativity into a meaningful reminder that no child or family faces a difficult season alone. Join A Moment of Magic for a nationwide, virtual Day of Service by creating handmade friendship bracelets for children facing serious illness. Volunteers can participate from anywhere, individually or alongside friends, family members, coworkers, classmates, or community groups. Create colorful friendship bracelets featuring joyful designs and encouraging words like MAGIC, BRAVE, JOY, HOPE, SHINE, COURAGE, FRIEND, DREAM, or SMILE. After September 11, completed bracelets will be mailed to A Moment of Magic and shared with children and families through our programs and community partners. A Moment of Magic is a national nonprofit organization reimagining what healing looks like by blending the power of play, mental health education, and community care to support medically vulnerable children and their families. Our programs are designed to help children feel connected, celebrated, and seen beyond their diagnosis. This project is completely virtual, which means you can serve wherever you are. Make one bracelet or make fifty. Host a bracelet-making lunch at your workplace, gather your family around the kitchen table, invite your friends over, or organize your entire school or community group. On September 11, we remember through service. Together, thousands of small acts of kindness can become something much bigger: a reminder that connection, compassion, and community matter. How it works: Register to participate. Gather friendship bracelet supplies. Make bracelets on or around September 11. Keep all designs and messages positive and child-appropriate. Mail your completed bracelets to A Moment of Magic after the Day of Service. Mailing instructions will be provided to registered volunteers. No special skills are required. All you need is a little creativity and a willingness to make a little magic for someone else.

Frequently asked questions

Is this opportunity virtual?

Yes! This is a fully remote service project. You can participate from anywhere in the United States and make your bracelets at home, school, work, or with a community group.

What supplies do I need?

You will need friendship bracelet supplies such as stretchy elastic or bracelet cord and beads. Letter beads are encouraged if you would like to add positive words or messages. Volunteers are responsible for providing their own supplies.

What should my bracelets say?

We love positive, encouraging words such as MAGIC, BRAVE, JOY, HOPE, SHINE, COURAGE, FRIEND, DREAM, SMILE, KIND, or STRONG. You can also create bracelets using colors and patterns without words. Please keep all messages positive, inclusive, and appropriate for children.

How many bracelets should I make?

There is no minimum. One bracelet matters! Volunteers are welcome to make as many as they would like.

Do the bracelets have to be made on September 11?

We encourage participants to make their bracelets on September 11 as an intentional act of service and remembrance. Schools, workplaces, and other groups may also organize their activity around 9/11 if scheduling on the exact date is not possible.

Where do I send my bracelets?

Registered volunteers will receive instructions for mailing completed bracelets to A Moment of Magic.

Can my company, school, club, or organization participate together?

Absolutely! We would love to see groups turn this into a shared Day of Service activity. You can host a bracelet-making station, team gathering, classroom activity, or community service event and send your completed bracelets together.

Who will receive the bracelets?

A Moment of Magic will use the bracelets to create moments of connection and encouragement for children and families facing serious illness through our programs and community partnerships.
