Spirit of 9/12: Day of Service Through Healing Art with The Holding Frames

In recognition of the 25th anniversary of September 11, The Holding Frames will host an expanded, community-centered activation of Spirit of 9/12 on September 12, 2026 — a youth-led day of service rooted in healing, connection, and the simple, powerful act of showing up for one another. The event will take place at Washington Market Park in Lower Manhattan, just blocks from the World Trade Center site — a place that holds deep personal and collective meaning. At its core, this project engages youth and community members in creating healing art that serves communities in crisis across the country — transforming remembrance into a tangible act of care. Spirit of 9/12 is grounded in the belief that while many young people today did not live through September 11, they can still carry forward what came after — the way people showed up for each other, the sense of unity, and the instinct to care for strangers as if they were neighbors. This day is about making that spirit tangible again. Here is what the day looks like: Youth Ambassadors (approximately 10–15 young people recruited from PS 234 Independence School, neighboring schools, and communities across New York City and beyond) will serve as project leaders — welcoming participants, guiding the art-making process, and helping shape the tone of the day. These are not passive participants; youth actively lead and co-create the experience. Participants will engage in a facilitated, trauma-informed art-making process using The Holding Frames’ FRAME Method (Finding Resilience After Major Events). Together, they will paint wooden frames and write messages of care, hope, and connection. No artistic experience is needed — the activity is designed to be accessible, inclusive, and meaningful for all ages. The event opens with a brief, youth-led reflection on the meaning of September 11, grounded in the personal connection of THF co-founder Cait Leavey, whose father, FDNY Lt. Joseph Leavey, was killed on 9/11. This is not a lecture, but a short, honest moment that invites participants to reflect on what it means to show up for others — and why that still matters today. From there, participants move into action. Completed artwork is packaged on-site by youth volunteers and prepared for shipment to communities across the country navigating crisis — including disaster-impacted areas, communities affected by violence, and those carrying long-term grief. Recipients are identified through THF’s ongoing community relationships. The project extends beyond 9/12. Youth Ambassadors will participate in a follow-up session where they track where their frames were delivered, hear from recipient communities, and reflect on their experience — reinforcing the connection between remembrance and impact. They will also share their reflections through a short presentation or written piece in their school or community. Target: 200+ participants, 300+ completed healing art pieces, delivery to 4–6 recipient communities.

Make a Little Magic: Friendship Bracelets for Children Facing Serious Illness

This 9/11 Day, turn a small act of creativity into a meaningful reminder that no child or family faces a difficult season alone. Join A Moment of Magic for a nationwide, virtual Day of Service by creating handmade friendship bracelets for children facing serious illness. Volunteers can participate from anywhere, individually or alongside friends, family members, coworkers, classmates, or community groups. Create colorful friendship bracelets featuring joyful designs and encouraging words like MAGIC, BRAVE, JOY, HOPE, SHINE, COURAGE, FRIEND, DREAM, or SMILE. After September 11, completed bracelets will be mailed to A Moment of Magic and shared with children and families through our programs and community partners. A Moment of Magic is a national nonprofit organization reimagining what healing looks like by blending the power of play, mental health education, and community care to support medically vulnerable children and their families. Our programs are designed to help children feel connected, celebrated, and seen beyond their diagnosis. This project is completely virtual, which means you can serve wherever you are. Make one bracelet or make fifty. Host a bracelet-making lunch at your workplace, gather your family around the kitchen table, invite your friends over, or organize your entire school or community group. On September 11, we remember through service. Together, thousands of small acts of kindness can become something much bigger: a reminder that connection, compassion, and community matter. How it works: Register to participate. Gather friendship bracelet supplies. Make bracelets on or around September 11. Keep all designs and messages positive and child-appropriate. Mail your completed bracelets to A Moment of Magic after the Day of Service. Mailing instructions will be provided to registered volunteers. No special skills are required. All you need is a little creativity and a willingness to make a little magic for someone else.

Colors of Restoration: A Community Empowerment Painting Session & Giveaway Drive

In partnership with 9/11 Day, Brunch with the Word is bringing restoration and renewal to Brooklyn. This event is centered on empowerment and giving back. Attendees will paint as an act of personal restoration — a way of processing past pain and renewing the mind. That same creative output, alongside a parallel care package effort, becomes our gift back to the community. We’ll talk identity, mindset renewal, and emotional wellness, because rebuilding starts from within. Then we’ll put it into action: a community giveaway drive delivering paintings, care packages, and groceries to families and elders right here in our neighborhood. In the spirit of 9/11’s national day of service, we’re turning creativity into community care.

A Day of Remembrance

My group is planning a program for the residents in our large 55+ Senior community . The morning will begin at 8:15 with a slide show and displays of photos, poems, related experiences of 9/11. The ballroom event starts promptly at 9:00 a.m. Our Veteran's Club will conduct an Honor Guard and the flag salute. This is to be followed by our chorus and the invocation. We have our Assemblyman and four residents, who were on site that fateful day, describe their experiences. The chorus sings another inspiring song and then the audience is given a task to do. Everyone will be given a Pay It Forward card to go out and do three good deeds. Throughout the program a bell will be rung each time a plane crashed or a tower went down. A Chat Room is set up for informal talks when the main program ends.
